Study:
Mold linked to asthma
A study published in the Thorax journal quoted Cardiff
University researchers as stating that indoor mold may have a link
with asthma and that "removing indoor mold improved the symptoms
of people with asthma." However, the researchers said more
work is needed in this area before definitive conclusions can be
drawn.
Patients with asthma living in two areas of South
Wales were asked if they noticed mold growing inside their houses.
An inspector confirmed there was Mold growth.
In a random selection process, half of the houses
with mold then were selected to have the mold removed and ventilation
was improved.
Dr. Michael Burr of Cardiff University's School of
Medicine said in a statement that the study revealed that "In the
houses where mold was removed, the symptoms of asthma improved and
the use of inhalers decreased more than in the other houses" and
that "removing mold also led to improvements in other symptoms:
sneezing, runny or blocked noses, and itchy-watery eyes."
