Cats
Died Due To Toxic Mold, says Vetrinary Specialist in Marathon Florida
According a recent American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA) news release, a new report that was published
in the Journal of the AVMA shows that toxic mold can be a hazard
to your pets health.
AVMA stated that the report is based on finding by
Douglas Mader in Marathon, Florida, a veterinary specialist, who
had been performing a dental procedure on two cats.
While performing the procedure the dentist noticed
"frothy blood" in the tubes that were used to supply the
anesthesia to the animals. Although the proceedure was immediately
stopped, both animals later died.
Blood retreieved from the two animals, prior to surgery,
was tested. The tests revealed levels of
the toxin produced by Stachybotrys chartarum, which is also known
as "toxic black mold".
AVMA stated that "when exposed to the mold, it
can cause respiratory problems, pulmonary hemorrhage and death in
people. The symptoms have never been associated with animals until
now."
The deaths of two cats from what is believed to
be the first documented case of toxic black mold poisoning in pets
point to a new health concern for pet owners.
The two cats were healthy, indoor cats. "The circumstances
of these cases are just not heard of," Mader said. "Anesthesia
doesn't cause pulmonary hemorrhage [bleeding from the lungs.]"
These were healthy, indoor cats. Examinations conducted prior to
the dental cleanings showed no indications of illness.
What is known is that both of the cats had lived in
homes that had prior water damage from hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Once Mader found out that the test came back with
the results of the toxin in them, he urged the owners of the animals
to have their home inspected for mold. According to Mader, severe
mold contamination was detected in their walls. This then lead to
the weakening of the animals capillaries in the lungs which then
burst and then bled. Both of the animals died from complication
which came from a pulmonary hemorrhage.
Mader hopes that with these findings, animal owners
who have been affected by water intrusion damage, flood waters,
hurricanes or anything else that will cause mold to grow inside
the area where the animals are, will become more aware of the dangers
that black mold can cause.
Mader is urging anyone with these circumstances to
have their homes checked for any signs of mold and subsequently
have it removed and taken care of, immediately.
